Florentine goldsmith turned architect, 1377 to 1446, who raised the dome of Florence Cathedral without conventional centering, inventing the machines the work required, and whose Foundling Hospital arcade opened Renaissance classicism. He is also credited with the first demonstrations of linear perspective, the drawing method that remade both painting and architectural design.
