Danish architect, 1918 to 2008, winner of the 1957 competition for the Sydney Opera House, whose shell vaults he resolved as segments of a single sphere before political conflict forced his resignation in 1966, the interiors finished by others. He never returned to see the building; the 2003 Pritzker Prize and Sydney's later reconciliation with him acknowledged the masterpiece it had cost him.
