Japanese architect, 1913 to 2005, who joined modern structure to Japanese tradition in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and the sweeping suspended roofs of the Yoyogi National Gymnasiums for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Teacher of a generation and godfather of the Metabolist movement, he received the Pritzker Prize in 1987.
