Balloon framing is a light-timber construction method that emerged in nineteenth century America, distinguished by long, continuous wall studs that run uninterrupted from the sill plate at the foundation all the way to the top plate at the roofline, with intermediate floor joists let into and nailed against the sides of these studs rather than each floor being framed as a separate, self-contained box. This continuous-stud approach differs fundamentally from the platform framing that later replaced it, in which each story is built independently atop the completed floor platform below. Balloon framing's rise depended on the wide availability of dimensional sawn lumber and cheap machine-cut nails, which together allowed relatively unskilled labour to erect a sturdy frame quickly, without the mortise-and-tenon joinery that heavy timber framing required. Its documented origin lies in early 1830s Chicago, though the credit is genuinely disputed: sources attribute the first balloon-framed structure, a 1832 Chicago warehouse, to either George Washington Snow or Augustine Deodat Taylor, and some accounts point to still earlier precursor buildings in Ste Genevieve, Missouri. The method's chief drawback is fire safety, because the stud cavities run continuously from basement to attic without firestopping, a hazard that eventually spurred code requirements for firestops and the shift toward platform framing.
