A tensile structure is a lightweight construction whose primary structural elements, typically a fabric or cable membrane, carry only tension, with no compression or bending, deriving their stiffness and load-carrying capacity not from material bulk but from a doubly curved geometric form held under deliberate pretension. Because the membrane is curved in two directions simultaneously, often into anticlastic, saddle-like shapes, it resists wind and snow loads without ballooning or fluttering, while masts, compression rings or perimeter beams supply the counteracting compressive forces the membrane cannot itself provide. This structural logic allows very large clear spans to be enclosed with minimal material and weight compared with rigid roof systems. The Russian engineer Vladimir Shukhov was an early pioneer, designing lightweight steel-net and membrane exhibition pavilions for the 1896 Nizhny Novgorod Fair, decades before the form became architecturally fashionable. The German architect and engineer Frei Otto became the technique's most influential modern champion, developing form-finding methods for tensile membranes and applying them at the West German pavilion for Expo 67 in Montreal and, most famously, the sweeping cable-net roof of the Munich Olympic Stadium for the 1972 Games. Popular accounts often credit Otto as the originator of tensile architecture, though Shukhov's pavilions preceded him by roughly seventy years, a point of historiography rather than a genuine dispute since both are acknowledged at different scales of influence.
