On 21 April 1960 Brazil inaugurated its new capital, built from nothing on the central plateau in under four years to Lucio Costa's airplane-shaped plan, with Oscar Niemeyer's cathedral, congress and palaces at its heart. It is the largest realized experiment in modernist city planning, World Heritage listed while barely thirty years old.
