In the first century BC the Roman architect and engineer Vitruvius dedicated his ten books on architecture to the emperor Augustus. As the only complete architectural treatise to survive antiquity, its rediscovery and printing in the Renaissance made it the foundation of European architectural theory for four hundred years.
