The founding in London in 1834 of the Institute of British Architects, which received royal patronage from Queen Victoria in 1837 to become the Royal Institute of British Architects, the first professional body to organize the practice of architecture in Britain, setting examinations and ethical codes and, from 1848, awarding the Royal Gold Medal for distinguished service to architecture.
