Le Corbusier's collected essays, published in Paris in 1923 as Vers une architecture and in English translation in 1927 as Towards a New Architecture, which declared the house a machine for living in and held up grain silos, factories and ocean liners as unselfconscious models of engineering beauty that architects had forgotten how to achieve deliberately. It became one of the most influential architectural books of the twentieth century, read as a founding manifesto of the modern movement.
