CIAM, the Congres Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne, was an international organisation of architects founded in June 1928 at the Chateau de la Sarraz in Switzerland, convened by Le Corbusier, castle owner Helene de Mandrot and architectural historian Sigfried Giedion, who became its first secretary-general; the Swiss architect Karl Moser served as founding president. Conceived as a manifesto-driven body to advance modern architecture as a social art, CIAM held its executive functions through CIRPAC, the International Committee for the Resolution of Problems in Contemporary Architecture, and convened eleven congresses between 1928 and 1959 across Europe addressing urbanism, housing, industrial design and landscape. Its most influential output was the 1933 Athens congress, which produced the Athens Charter, a foundational document of modernist urban planning that shaped postwar reconstruction and city planning worldwide. CIAM treated architecture as inseparable from politics and economics, pushing architects toward social-engineering approaches to housing and urban form. Internal disagreements, including Le Corbusier's 1955 departure over the increasing use of English at meetings, led to the organisation's dissolution in 1959 at its final congress in Otterlo, organised by the younger dissident faction Team 10.
