The Getty Conservation Institute

The Getty Conservation Institute is an international research institute founded in 1985 as one of four programmes of the J. Paul Getty Trust, alongside the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Getty Research Institute and the Getty Foundation. Headquartered at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, with additional facilities at the Getty Villa, the GCI works to advance conservation practice in the visual arts, broadly defined to include objects, collections, architecture and archaeological and heritage sites. It pursues this mission through scientific research, professional education and training, model field projects, and the publication and dissemination of conservation knowledge worldwide. Over four decades GCI has undertaken architectural and archaeological conservation projects across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas, with scientists conducting research into materials as varied as earthen architecture, modern paints and plastics, outdoor sculpture and historic photographs, and has partnered with UCLA to establish a graduate programme in conservation of cultural heritage.
