An independent research institute founded in 1996 in Darmstadt, Germany, by physicist Wolfgang Feist to develop, promote and certify buildings to the Passive House (Passivhaus) energy standard. The concept traces to a 1988 discussion between Feist and Bo Adamson, and the first four Passive House terraced houses were completed in Darmstadt-Kranichstein in 1990 to 1991, before the institute itself was formally established.
