The Yingzao Fashi is the Song dynasty's official technical manual on building construction, compiled by the government official Li Jie, completed around 1100 and published by imperial order in 1103, with a second edition in 1145. Its thirty-four chapters set standards for stonework, woodwork, painting, glazing and mortar mixing, including specifications and illustrations for bracket-arm and joint construction (dougong), using an eight-rank grading system for timber sizes called cai-fen. It is the earliest Chinese technical building manual to survive intact.
