An Austrian architect and theorist, born 1870 in Brno and died 1933 near Vienna, whose stripped-down aesthetic and rejection of applied ornament were a founding polemic of architectural modernism. His built work, including the Looshaus and the Villa Muller, is as influential as his writing, and his own richly finished interiors in fine natural materials are themselves the subject of a standing open question about how they square with his own argument.
