German architect and designer, 1868 to 1940, appointed artistic consultant to the electrical firm AEG in 1907, for which he designed the AEG Turbine Factory (1909) and the company's full visual identity, one of the first corporate design programmes of its kind. Born in Hamburg and trained as a painter before turning to architecture, his Berlin office between about 1907 and 1912 trained three architects who reshaped twentieth century building in turn: Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who later said he first heard the phrase "less is more" there.
