German American architect, 1886 to 1969, last director of the Bauhaus, designer of the Barcelona Pavilion, the Farnsworth House and the Seagram Building, and author of the modernist credo less is more. His steel and glass discipline, refined at the Illinois Institute of Technology after his emigration in 1938, became the language of the postwar corporate tower worldwide.
