The completion in 1958 of the Seagram Building on Park Avenue in New York, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe with Philip Johnson, whose bronze-toned steel frame, amber glass curtain wall and plaza set back from the street distilled the International Style's glass-box skyscraper to its most refined statement, copied in cheaper materials across corporate America for the following two decades.
