American architect, 1906 to 2005, the Museum of Modern Art's founding curator of architecture, who co-curated the museum's 1932 exhibition that gave the new European modernism its American name, the International Style. He later worked with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe on the Seagram Building, became the Pritzker Architecture Prize's first laureate in 1979, and turned in his own later work toward the historical ornament of postmodernism, most visibly in Manhattan's AT&T Building.
