In 1979 the Pritzker family of Chicago, through the Hyatt Foundation, established an annual international prize for a living architect whose built work shows talent, vision and commitment. Philip Johnson was the first laureate, and the prize quickly became the profession's highest honor, spoken of as architecture's Nobel.
