A building whose total annual energy consumption is roughly equal to the renewable energy it generates on site, reached through a combination of aggressive efficiency measures such as insulation, passive design and high-performance glazing together with on-site generation such as photovoltaic panels. It is an increasingly common benchmark written into green building codes and certification systems.
