A nonprofit membership organization founded in 1993 by Rick Fedrizzi, David Gottfried and Mike Italiano to promote sustainability in building design, construction and operation. USGBC developed and now administers LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), the most widely used green building rating and certification system in the world, and its headquarters building in Washington, D.C. carries LEED Platinum certification itself.
