In April 1919 Walter Gropius merged the Weimar academy of fine art with the school of arts and crafts to found the Staatliches Bauhaus, declaring in its manifesto that the ultimate aim of all creative activity is the building. Its fourteen year experiment set the terms of modern design education worldwide.
