Le Corbusier's 1927 manifesto of five principles that reinforced concrete construction made possible: pilotis raising the building clear of the ground on slender columns, a free plan unconstrained by load-bearing walls, a free facade independent of the structural frame behind it, the fenetre en longueur, a horizontal ribbon window running the length of a wall, and a roof garden reclaiming the ground the building covers. Villa Savoye, built 1928 to 1931 outside Paris, is their fullest single demonstration, and the five points became a working checklist for the modern movement for a generation.
