Concrete cast around steel reinforcement, marrying the compressive strength of one to the tensile strength of the other, developed commercially in the late nineteenth century from the work of builders such as Joseph Monier and Francois Hennebique. It is the most used structural material on Earth, and the free plans, thin shells and bold cantilevers of modern architecture are unthinkable without it.
